Home Music Lessons – The Benefits of Taking Music Lessons in Your Home

We have all heard about the academic and personal benefits of learning music lessons los angeles and playing the piano. Once the family has decided to start a music lesson, they can choose between music lessons at home or music lessons in a teacher’s studio.

One of the questions that music teachers often hear at home is: “Does taking music lessons in one’s own home make this important compared to a school or studio? The answer is ‘absolutely’! I have taught more than 200 students in both home and studio music lessons – I can speak from experience. The comparison between them is crystal clear.

What makes home lessons so successful? The answer can be found in the child’s reaction. How the child perceives what is happening in the lesson is crucial for the success of a young student musician. Does the student receive positive feedback and encouragement? Or are they only told what they do wrong. Does the child have a positive one-on-one relationship with a music teacher? Is the lesson another “work” that the child has to finish before he or she can play? Or is the lesson a real feast they are looking forward to.

Children are unbelievably perceptive. They can sense whether anyone is really interested in them and will react almost immediately to even the slightest rise or fall in the teacher’s voice. The child’s perception is even more noticeable when the child feels comfortable – for example in the familiar surroundings of his or her own home. I have seen children become extremely concentrated when they feel the presence of a parent in a nearby room. Children have a natural desire to please – and this desire is doubled when it comes to parental satisfaction. By keeping music lessons at home, children are constantly reminded of their goal. I saw mom praise the child for learning his or her favourite song. Lessons at home remind the child of his or her goal and this completely changes the way the child perceives the lessons.

Having a music or piano lesson at home is also a completely different experience from any other activity. Most homes don’t have the equipment to practice with a swimming team in the living room! Music lessons are one of the few extracurricular activities that children can use in their homes. This creates a unique experience that your child sees as a unique event – different from anything else they do (and probably their friends).

Creating a unique experience really comes to light when you compare lessons at home with lessons in the studio. Children spend on average eight hours a day in the school environment, where they receive a constant stream of information. When lessons are taught in a school or studio, the setting imitates the school environment. Although music lessons are better than nothing, a child often begins to associate lessons as another subject to pass – not something that can be loved and enjoyed throughout life. Again, exposing your child to any form of music lesson is a gift, but the question we study is whether music at home is not a more effective choice than lessons in the studio or school. While music lessons in the studio are better than no lessons at all, the student will be able to take full advantage of music lessons at home.
